Custom Art for the Playroom

Happy hump day, everyone! Today I’m giving those of you who took the time to click through to my blog (THANK YOU! 🤗) a sneak peek inside our upstairs den/playroom. I haven’t shared the full room yet (I’ll be doing a full before and after post for this space soon), but I decided to spoil the surprise a bit so I could share with y’all our new, custom Taelor Fischer artwork + give a little behind the scenes into the commission process and what it was like working with Taelor. 👩🏼‍🎨

This was my first time commissioning a piece of art vs. buying an inexpensive giclée print. It took me a bit to commit to going this route because I was apprehensive about spending money on something I couldn’t guarantee I was going to love in the end. Thankfully, it turns out my fears were completely unfounded, and I’m so glad I decided to go the custom route!

Ultimately, here’s why I decided to go custom for our upstairs den/playroom space... A couple years ago, we renovated and decorated the downstairs of our home, and for me, choosing art was always the hardest part of the design process. I would spend hours searching through magazines and online for the perfect piece that "spoke to me", but would walk away feeling frustrated when nothing I found was quite right. The hunt wasn’t fun, and it took up a lot of my time and energy. Fortunately, I ran across Taelor's work on Instagram while I was looking for design inspiration for the nursery. Right away, her work checked all the boxes for me. First and foremost, I love flowers. They make me happy. I also gravitate towards abstract art, so the idea of combining my love for florals with a custom, abstract piece designed to fit our space and within our color scheme was a no brainer.

Bottom line: I chose to save myself the time and headache of searching for a piece on my own, ran across Taelor’s (gorgeous) work and it spoke to me, and so I sent her an e-mail for more info.

Above you can see fabric swatches, paint colors, and a snippet of the other artwork hanging in the room (bottom left corner). We sent all of these details to Taelor ahead of time to use as inspiration for the piece.

Once we settled on pricing, she sent me a super easy questionnaire to fill out that helped guide us both through the process. I also sent her images of our fabric swatches and paint color selections (seen in graphic above). After selecting colors and sizing (the canvas is 60” x 40”), she got started on the piece and sent me occasional updates so I could make changes like adding more blue, using less green, etc. I think I only made one change though! We communicated all via e-mail, and Taelor worked with me to make sure the piece was delivered in time for our furniture install day. She was a dream to work with and met every deadline!

I’m just thrilled with how it turned out! Plus, I can’t say enough kind things about Taelor. She was so sweet and professional and is such a talent. Being totally honest here… getting to know her was probably my favorite part of this whole experience! She’s a rockstar.

If you’re interested in learning more about the commission process, Taelor goes into detail about my project specifically on her blog which you can read here. Also, please note that she has more styles to choose from than the one I selected, so if this isn’t really your look there’s plenty of other options that may fit your aesthetic. I can’t recommend her enough. Thanks so much for everything, Taelor!
